The ICC has suspended the Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) with immediate effect. According to reports, the ICC has taken this decision due to widespread government interference in the administration of the Sri Lanka Cricket Board.

The dissolution of the Sri Lankan Cricket Board was a result of government interference. There was an uproar following Sri Lanka’s defeat against India in the ODI World Cup 2023. The Sri Lankan government initially dissolved the cricket board, but after court intervention, the board was reinstated.
Subsequently, the government and the opposition jointly proposed changes in Parliament to challenge the court’s decision. Due to this interference, the ICC has temporarily suspended the Sri Lankan Cricket Board. “The ICC Board convened today and determined that Sri Lanka Cricket had seriously breached its membership obligations,” the ICC stated, emphasizing the necessity for autonomous management and the prevention of government interference in governance, regulation, and administration. The terms of the suspension will be determined by the ICC Board in due course.
ICC To Hold Next Meeting In Ahmedabad From 18 To 21 Nov.
The ICC meeting, scheduled every three months, is set to take place in Ahmedabad from November 18 to 21. In response to the situation in Sri Lankan cricket, the ICC held an online meeting on Friday. It is understood that the ICC Board expressed concern about the Sri Lankan government’s interference in various areas within the SLC, ranging from administration to finance and matters concerning the national team. The ICC has notified the SLC of its decision, stating that further steps will be deliberated at the ICC Board meeting on November 21.
Although Sri Lankan Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe dismissed the SLC board on Monday and established an interim committee led by Arjuna Ranatunga, the Sri Lankan courts issued a 14-day stay order on the gazetting to dissolve the board a day later, effectively reinstating the board.
Since then, extensive debates have taken place in Parliament on matters related to Sri Lankan cricket. However, until the ICC’s suspension on Friday, the elected SLC board, led by Shammi Silva, continued to govern cricket in the country.
Despite the interim committee’s assumption of power, the ICC did not implement the suspension before the appointment of such committees by the government. The last instance of an interim committee was from 2014 to 2015, leading the ICC to place funds owed to the SLC in escrow and grant the SLC observer status at board meetings, although it remained an official ICC member.
According to the country’s sports law, in effect since 1973, the Sports Minister of Sri Lanka holds the role of approving all Sri Lankan national teams. The SLC becomes the second full member to be suspended by the ICC in the last four years, following Zimbabwe Cricket’s suspension in 2019 due to government interference. However, unlike Zimbabwe, where all cricket activities and funding were abruptly halted, the ICC will proceed cautiously in Sri Lanka’s case.
