The Reasons Why ICC Suspends Sri Lanka Cricket Board

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has taken immediate action, suspending the Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC). The decision is rooted in reports of extensive government interference in the board's administration

Following Sri Lanka's defeat against India in the ODI World Cup 2023, an uproar ensued. In response, the Sri Lankan government initially dissolved the cricket board

Court intervention followed the dissolution, leading to the reinstatement of the cricket board. Subsequently, the government and opposition jointly proposed changes in Parliament, challenging the court's decision

Due to ongoing interference, the ICC decided to temporarily suspend the Sri Lankan Cricket Board. The ICC Board cited serious breaches of membership obligations, emphasizing the need for autonomous management.

The terms of the suspension will be determined by the ICC Board in due course. This decision reflects the ICC's commitment to preventing government interference in governance, regulation, and administration.

The ICC meeting, scheduled every three months, is set to take place in Ahmedabad from November 18 to 21. An online meeting held on Friday addressed the situation, expressing concern over government interference in various areas within the SLC.

Sri Lanka's Sports Minister dismissed the SLC board and formed an interim committee. However, the Sri Lankan courts issued a 14-day stay order, effectively reinstating the board. Extensive debates in Parliament ensued.

Despite the interim committee's assumption of power, the ICC did not implement the suspension before the appointment of such committees by the government. The ICC proceeds cautiously, learning from past instances like Zimbabwe Cricket's suspension in 2019.
