Rahul Dravid’s Contract Extension Will Be Decided After South Africa Tour

Rahul Dravid was initially appointed as head coach for two years, which ended with India being runner-up in the ODI World Cup on 19th November. He later received a short-term extension till June 2024 for the T20 World Cup mainly based on time constraints.

“Time was not there,” said BCCI secretary Jay Shah yesterday. “We met him and mutually agreed to let him continue…Once we come back from South Africa, we are going to sit down with him to decide about how long he should remain.”

This move has led to speculation surrounding Dravid’s future. Although he has largely done well as head coach, leading India to significant achievements across formats, his long-term vision and strategy are matters of debate.

Also adding to among other things, Rohit Sharma’s captaincy is still in doubt. Even though Rohit is the ODI skipper, he hasn’t played any T20I for over a year and it is not clear whether he will participate in the forthcoming T20 World Cup in June or not.

Rohit Sharma’s Involvement In T20 World Cup Is Not Yet Guaranteed

Some people believe Rohit should be picked for the tournament, but Shah does not want to commit himself. “IPL is before that and then the series against Afghanistan. June has the tournament,” he explained.

Another area of concern is whether key players such as Shami and Pandya will be fit enough for the matches. Starting with October 19th, Pandya has been absent due to a back injury, while Shami is still recovering from an ankle injury he picked at the World Cup.

On a positive note, Shah gave an update on both players. Referring to Pandya, he said, “He is being monitored on a day-to-day basis.” “He’s in NCA,” he added. “We’ll let you know when we know where it’s going. He can get fit before the Afghanistan series also.”

Shah sounded hopeful that Shami would recover ahead of the South Africa tour. Speaking about him, Shah said, “He should be ready for the South Africa series.” However, he hasn’t gone to NCA yet but will probably go soon there. But we have faith that it will be alright in time.”

As crucial decisions await and uncertainties loom over the team, the impending South Africa tour holds immense significance for Dravid and the BCCI. The outcome of the tour and its performances stand to greatly impact their overall strategic vision for the Indian cricket team.
