“During our retention discussions, Joe informed us of his choice to sit out IPL 2024,” said Kumar Sangakkara, Royals’ director of cricket. “Even in a brief period, Joe had a profoundly positive impact on the franchise and the players. His energy and experience will be missed. We fully respect his decision and wish him success in all his endeavors.”

Rob Key, England’s managing director of men’s cricket, had mentioned after revealing the squad for the Caribbean tour that Root “needs a break” following the World Cup.”He’s been on the go since probably New Zealand, or what he did in Pakistan, the ILT20, New Zealand, the Hundred, Ashes, and so on,” Key explained.

In the IPL 2023 auction, Root was picked up by the Royals for his base price of INR 1 crore ($US 121,000 approx. at the time). Although he played three games, he only batted in one, scoring 10 against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Jaipur. Despite limited opportunities, Root aimed to be a “sponge” in India, absorbing various information and adapting to the T20 format. He relished the company of young players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, the breakout star of IPL 2023, and Riyan Parag.
