After ICC T20 World Cup 2024 India Tour Of Sri Lanka Announced

Sri Lanka Cricket has unveiled its calendar for the upcoming year, outlining plans to commence bilateral series with Zimbabwe in January. This series will consist of a three-match T20I and a three-match ODI series. It’s noteworthy that the Sri Lankan cricket scene has faced challenges following their disappointing performance in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

Sri Lanka cricket CEO Ashley De Silva said that the 2024 calendar will provide the players with better opportunities in the game. De Silva said, “We are heading into a highly exciting year with a lot of international cricket to be played, which augurs well for us, as our team will be engaged in competitive cricket year around. The 2024 calendar is expected to give our players a lot of playing opportunities, fans entertainment, and our sponsors great exposure.

In the year 2024, the Sri Lankan cricket team is scheduled to play 52 international matches, including the ICC T20 World Cup. They’ll jump back into the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle with a tour to Bangladesh in February and March. Unfortunately, their 9th-place finish in the World Cup 2023 points table means they won’t participate in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, set to be held in Pakistan.

Sri Lanka Cricket Facing Turbulence after ICC Ban

The International Cricket Council (ICC) took action against Sri Lanka Cricket, imposing a ban due to government interference following their exit from the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

This move was prompted by Sri Lanka’s poor performance in the tournament, leading to political repercussions. Consequently, the ICC relocated the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2024 from Sri Lanka to South Africa in response to the ban. However, in a subsequent ICC board meeting, Sri Lanka was granted permission to participate in bilateral cricket and ICC events.

Reflecting on India’s recent encounters with Sri Lanka, the last tour took place in 2021. During this tour, the Indian team, led by Shikhar Dhawan, comprised mostly of younger players. The series included three T20Is and three ODIs.

Despite the absence of key Indian players, the team managed to secure a 2-1 victory in the ODI series but lost the T20I series 1-2. This series happened concurrently with the prominent Indian players being in England for a five-match test series.
