New Zealand secured a five-wicket victory against Sri Lanka in the 41st match of the ODI World Cup 2023 , keeping their hopes alive for the semi-finals . However, this win has intensified the challenges for Pakistan.

They must deliver a remarkable performance in the upcoming match against England on Saturday (11 November). New Zealand’s triumph not only dashed Pakistan’s hopes but also those of Afghanistan.

If both Pakistan and Afghanistan are eliminated from the World Cup, the first-placed Indian team will face New Zealand in the semi-finals. This clash is scheduled for November 15 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Simultaneously, the second semi-final will take place between Australia and South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on November 16. The final showdown is set for November 19 at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. What scenarios does Pakistan face?

If the Pakistan team bats first against England, they need to win the match by a margin of 287 runs. Conversely, if Pakistan bats in the second innings, they must achieve any target set by England within 16 balls.

How Pakistan Can Qualify For Semi-Finals

  • If Pakistani team scores 300 runs while batting first, they need to all out England for 13 runs to win by 287 runs.
  • If Pakistani team for 350 runs while batting first, they must bowl out England for 63 runs to secure a victory by 287 runs.
  • If Pakistani team scores 400 runs, they need to all out England for 112 runs to win by 288 runs.
  • If Pakistani team bats later, they must achieve the target in 2.4 overs.

Notably, Pakistan has not crossed the 400-run mark in ODI history. Their highest score is 399 runs for one wicket against Zimbabwe in 2018, and the second highest is 385 runs for seven wickets in 2010 against Bangladesh in Dambulla. To advance to the semi-finals this time, Pakistan must aim for 400 runs. In contrast, the England team has never allowed any team to score 400 runs in ODIs against them.

In terms of the score table status, after the win over Sri Lanka, New Zealand has accumulated 10 points from nine matches with a net run rate of +0.743. Meanwhile, Pakistan is in fifth place, having won four out of eight matches with eight points and a net run rate of +0.036. Afghanistan, with four wins out of eight matches, holds eight points with a net run rate of -0.338, making their chances of reaching the semi-finals slim.

New Zealand Beats Sri Lanka At Bengaluru

New Zealand secured a five-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the 41st match of the ODI World Cup 2023. This marks their fifth win in the tournament, keeping their hopes alive for reaching the semi-finals.

Winning the toss, New Zealand opted to bowl first at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. The Sri Lankan team, batting first, was all out for 171 runs. New Zealand clinched the match by scoring 172 runs for five wickets in 23.1 overs.

New Zealand has maintained its chances of advancing to the semi-finals by overcoming Sri Lanka. All their league round matches have concluded. New Zealand has garnered 10 points from nine matches, securing victory in five and facing defeat in four. The triumph over Sri Lanka also snapped their four-game losing streak.

If the Kiwi team secures a spot in the semi-finals, they will face India in Mumbai. Meanwhile, the Afghanistan team is on the verge of being eliminated from the World Cup. Simultaneously, Pakistan will need a miraculous performance to reach the semi-finals.

New Zealand won the toss and decided to bowl first. There was one change each in both the teams. New Zealand gave a chance to Lockie Ferguson in place of Ish Sodhi. Sri Lanka left out Kasun Rajitha and included Chamika Karunaratne in the squad.
