Australian batsman Glenn Maxwell made history today, in the World Cup match against the Netherlands. He recorded the fastest century in World Cup history. He achieved this feat at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, hitting the thunderous century in just 40 balls.
Coming in at number six in the batting order, Glenn Maxwell played a remarkable innings, scoring 106 runs off 44 balls, including 9 fours and 8 sixes.
With this century in just 40 balls, Glenn Maxwell also broke the record for the fastest century in this World Cup, surpassing South African Batsman Aiden Markram who scored the record century in the same venue against Sri Lanka few days back.
In terms of the match, Australia set a target of 400 runs for the Netherlands. Australia won the toss and opted to bat first, Opener Michael Marsh, lost his wicket quickly.
Following that, David Warner and Steve Smith put together a good partnership, contributing 132 runs together. Steve Smith showed his aggressive side, scoring 71 runs off 68 balls, which included six fours and a six.
After Steve Smith’s dismissal, David Warner was joined by Marnus Labuschagne, who also played a fast but impactful innings. Labuschagne played a quick knock of 62 runs off 47 balls, including two sixes and seven boundaries.
Later, Josh Inglis took the crease for batting, but he couldn’t play a long innings. After Inglis got out today’s superstar Glenn Maxwell entered the field.
Maxwell came to bat after David Warner had already completed his century. However, he got out trying to play a big shot and got out. Maxwell, known for his unconventional style, started playing in his characteristic fashion.
He took on the Netherlands bowlers aggressively, hitting 9 sixes and 9 fours to score 106 runs off just 44 balls. He completely turned the scoreboard around and, for a moment, it seemed like the Netherlands might restrict Australia to a score between 310 and 320. But thanks to Glenn Maxwell’s power-packed innings, Australia reached a massive total of 399 runs.
The ongoing World Cup has been witnessing records being broken continuously. It will be interesting to see what new dimensions this World Cup adds to the history of cricket and which records will be shattered in the upcoming matches.
For now, the target of 399 runs will be a tough challenge for the Netherlands, but it will also help Australia improve their run rate in the points table, as they would want to defeat the Netherlands by a significant margin and boost their run rate.
