After a mixed start during the powerplay, Pathum Nissanka partnered with captain Kusal Mendis, contributing 61 runs off 63 balls to hold the innings together. However, after the dismissals of Mendis and Nissanka, Sadeera Samarawickrama teamed up with Charith Asalanka to form a 63-run partnership. But Samarawickrama couldn’t complete his half-century and was dismissed after scoring 41 runs.

After Samarawickrama, Angelo Mathews timed out, becoming the first batsman in international cricket to experience a “timeout.” Despite losing consecutive wickets, Asalanka and Dhananjaya de Silva played a steady partnership, adding 78 runs to the scoreboard from 82 balls.

In the 38th over, De Silva was also dismissed. At the 30-over mark, Sri Lanka had scored 171 runs, losing 5 wickets. After 40 overs, the team’s score was 223/6. Sri Lanka couldn’t reach 300 runs even in the death overs, losing 4 wickets in the final 10 overs while scoring 57 runs. Sri Lanka was bowled out for 279 runs in 49.3 overs.

Angelo Mathews Timed Out Incident In BAN vs SL, First In The Cricket History

The Sri Lanka vs. Bangladesh match witnessed a major controversy when Sri Lanka’s experienced batsman Angelo Mathews was timed out. After the dismissal of Samarawickrama, Mathews was supposed to face the next delivery within the specified time.

According to the rules, Mathews was required to reach the crease within two minutes and be prepared to face the next ball within three minutes. However, he failed to do so, resulting in a timed-out decision.

Bangladesh had the option to withdraw their appeal, which could have given Mathews another chance to bat. Still, Shakib Al Hasan, the captain of the Bangladesh team, chose not to do so.

When Mathews returned to the pitch, he had the wrong helmet with him. He asked the substitute player to bring another helmet. The umpire and the Bangladeshi players had to wait for quite some time.

Shakib Al Hasan then appealed for a timed-out dismissal, and the umpire ruled Mathews out. If Bangladesh had withdrawn their appeal, Mathews might have had the opportunity to continue batting, but Shakib decided not to do so.

After Mathews returned to the pavilion, Sri Lankan captain Kusal Mendis had a conversation with Chandika Hathurusingha, Bangladesh’s coach. The fourth umpire was also present during their discussion.

Chandika Hathurusingha did not have anything in his hands as Mathews had already returned to the pavilion after being dismissed. The incident created controversy and drew the ire of Sri Lanka’s coach, Chris Silverwood.

Bangladesh Innings, Shakib and Shanto Masterclass

While chasing the target of 281, Bangladesh didn’t have a good start. Dilshan Madhu Shankar got the wicket of Tanzid Hasan Tamim in the first ball of the third over.

Tanzid managed to score 9 runs from 5 deliveries. After that, Liton Das and Najmul Hussain Shanto made a small partnership, but soon Dilshan Madhushanka struck again and got Liton Das lbw.

Liton managed to score 29 runs from 22 balls. After that, Shakib Al Hasan came to the crease, and he and Shanto started building a strong partnership. They played some excellent shots all around the ground. After 20 overs, Bangladesh’s score was 123 for 2. They were going at over six runs per over.

Shanto completed his half-century in 58 balls. However, Bangladesh lost their third wicket at a score of 210 runs when Captain Shakib Al Hasan got out after making 82 runs in 65 balls, which included 12 fours and two sixes.

Angelo Mathews dismissed him. After that, Bangladesh started losing wickets. Shanto was also sent to the pavilion by Angelo Mathews; he missed his century and scored 19 runs from 21 balls.

After that, Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim formed a small partnership, but at a score of 249, Mushfiqur Rahim got out, scoring 10 runs in 13 balls, Madhushankar bowled him. So, Bangladesh lost its seventh wicket.

Mehedi Hasan Miraj got out after scoring 3 runs in 5 balls, and Teekshana got his wicket. In the end, Hridoy and Tanzim took Bangladesh over the line. Bangladesh won by 3 wickets.
