Australian Innings, Losing The Toss And Batting First

Australia started aggressively during the Powerplay. Their opening batsman, Travis Head, wasted no time in playing big shots but lost his wicket in the second over.

Steve Smith then took charge of the innings, defending for two overs. In the sixth over, David Warner also got out. Marnus Labuschagne and Smith stabilized the innings, adding 9 runs in the final 4 Powerplay overs.

For England, David Willey and Chris Woakes bowled five overs each. Woakes took both the wickets. Marnus Labuschagne, Australia’s number 4 batsman, stepped in and played a key role in recovering from the early wickets.

He formed a partnership with Steve Smith, but they both fell after a 75-run stand, leaving Marnus Labuschagne stranded. He had reached his fifty, but Mark Wood dismissed him, having scored 71 runs from 83 balls with 7 boundaries.

In the fifth over, Starc got rid of Joe Root as well, with wicketkeeper Josh Inglis taking the catch. Root scored 13 runs off 17 balls.

After losing two early wickets, Ben Stokes and David Malan steadied the ship for England. They formed a crucial partnership for the third wicket, with Malan scoring 50 runs from 64 balls before getting caught by Travis Head off Pat Cummins.

England’s captain, Jos Buttler, continued the fight, but he was caught by Cameron Green off Adam Zampa after scoring just one run. At 169 runs, England had lost half their team.

Adam Zamp, Man of the Match

I mean just summing up the conditions was important. We batted really well to get to 286. The ground got really dewy. Attacking the stumps was important. It came out as good as it ever has.

Felt really good. Just tried to be really positive and bat out the 50 overs. Was important to rotate the strike. One of those days. Felt satisfying. Hopefully my best is yet to come.

Pat Cummins, Australian Captian

It’s been great, the boys played brilliantly, we’re getting better with each match. We’ve improved with each game, still not playing the perfect game.

It’s something we pride ourselves on, we didn’t start well, but the boys have put their hands up, ever since the first 2 games. He has been bowling beautifully in the last 3 games, made 29 and took a banger.

We thought it was a good wicket and would probably break up to his strength. Maxi and Mitchy will be back, they have had a great tournament and for the others to come in and put in a performance was nice.

It wasn’t too bad tonight, sometimes we do see players getting wet as they slide on, but it wasn’t that bad today.
