Angelo Mathews Timed Out Incident Is The First In The International Cricket History

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh face each other At Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium in the 38th Match of the World Cup 2023. Both the teams are already eliminated from the tournament and now playing for the pride. Bangladesh won the toss and decided to bowl first.

In the match something unbelievable happened that left everyone in disbelief. Sri Lankan batsman Angelo Mathews walked to the crease to bat, but the umpire asked him to return.

The umpires claimed that Mathews was already out. There was a lengthy argument between the umpire and Mathews, but in the end, he had to return. Mathews was timed out. This was the first instance in international cricket when a batsman was timed out.

During the 38th match of the ODI World Cup 2023, a surprising incident occurred that left everyone in disbelief. Bangladesh’s captain, Shakib Al Hasan, won the toss and called upon Sri Lanka to bat. In the 24th over of the innings, Sadira Samarawickrama got out on the second ball. After that, Angelo Mathews was sent in to bat.

Mathews made his way to the field, but his helmet strap wasn’t in the right position. While he awaited the correct helmet, he prepared to face the ball. However, in the meantime, the umpires asked him to return. Mathews was timed out, and it left him astounded.

There was a heated argument between Mathews and the umpires. Mathews also discussed the matter with the opposing team’s captain, Shakib Al Hasan. But neither side was willing to withdraw their appeal. As a result, Mathews had to leave the field without facing a single delivery. Dhananjaya de Silva then took over the batting for Sri Lanka.

Mathews, clearly frustrated, walked off the field, tossing his helmet and bat aside. This whole incident stirred up quite a controversy. This was the first instance in international cricket when a batsman was timed out. Prior to this, only six batters had been timed out in all formats of cricket.

The International Cricket Rule

According to the rules set by the Million Cricket Club, after a wicket falls or a batsman retires, the incoming batsman should be ready to face the delivery within three minutes. If this doesn’t happen, the incoming batsman will be timed out.

In the context of the ODI World Cup 2023, the rules state that after a wicket falls, the new batsman must be prepared to face the ball within two minutes.

Sri Lanka will play its last match against New Zealand at Bengaluru, It will be a make or break match for the kiwis to make their way into the Semi Finals of ODI World Cup 2023.
