Afghanistan beat The Netherlands by seven wickets in the 34th match of World Cup 2023 at Lucknow. This is Afghanistan’s 4th win in this World Cup, elevating them to the 5th spot on the points table, one spot above their neighbor Pakistan.
The Netherlands won the toss and chose to bat first, considering the pitch conditions, but their batsmen couldn’t capitalize. They were all out for 179 runs in 46.3 overs.
In response, Afghanistan chased down the target in 31.3 overs, losing just three wickets, ultimately defeating Netherlands by seven wickets. This match held great importance as both teams were in the race for the semi-finals. Afghanistan included their star, Noor Ahmed, in the team, while The Netherlands also made a change, bringing in Wesley Baressi in place of Vikram Singh.

AFG vs NED–The Netherlands had a a bad start after coming to bat first, their opener Wesley Baressi was caught LBW by Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the 5th ball of ist over. After the first wicket fell at a score of 3 runs, opener Max O’Dowd partnered with Colin Ackermann to take the Netherlands’ score past 70.
In the initial 10 overs, the Netherlands team scored 66 runs with the loss of one wicket. After an early breakthrough in the powerplay, the Netherlands’ innings unraveled in the middle overs.
Between the 11th and 40th over, the team’s batsmen couldn’t find the right coordination, resulting in 4 run-outs. Despite a challenging string of falling wickets, Saqib Zulfiqar played a struggling inning of 58 runs.

Afghanistan Chase, Holding The Nerves And Chased Down The Target
AFG vs NED-Chasing a target of 180 runs, Afghanistan lost their first wicket at 27 runs. Gurbaz, after scoring 10 runs off 11 balls, was unfortunately run out. He attempted to play a pull shot outside the leg stump but the ball hit his gloves and reached the wicketkeeper.
The umpire initially called it a wide delivery, but the wicketkeeper and captain Edwards reviewed, resulting in Gurbaz’s dismissal at a score of 55 runs, marking Afghanistan’s second wicket.
Ibrahim Zadran scored 20 runs off 34 balls before being stumped by van der Merwe, making it the third wicket to fall at 129 runs. Rahmat Shah, who had scored 52 runs, was caught on his own delivery by Saqib Zulfiqar. After that Azmatullah Came to bat and both of them chased down the target.
Captain Hashmatullah scored the most for Afghanistan with 56 runs. Azmatullah remained not out at 31 runs. Logan van Beek, van der Merwe, and Saqib Zulfiqar took one wicket each for the Netherlands.
Afghanistan Climbed To The 5th Spot In The Points Table
Afghanistan has climbed to the 5th position on the points table with their third consecutive win, while the Netherlands is on the edge of elimination with back-to-back losses. After the 34th match, Afghanistan holds 8 points in the points table, whereas the Netherlands is at the 8th position with 4 points.
For the Dutch team to make it to the semifinals, they will need to win their remaining two matches. However, their upcoming matches against England and India are going to be tough challenges.
On the other hand, Afghanistan has 2 matches left against South Africa and Australia, and winning both matches will significantly improve their chances of reaching the semifinals. Losing even one match could diminish their chances, and losing both matches would likely result in their elimination.
